Tourist’s Death in 100 mph Crash: Street Racers Receive Probation

CHICAGO —

Two individuals have been ordered to serve probation for the death of a pedestrian near Midway Airport, which occurred when two Corvettes crashed during a 100 mph race. Judge Ursula Walowski heard the guilty pleas of Noe Garcia, 37, and Aaron Guerrero, 29.

The prosecution stated that video and witness accounts obtained by the Chicago police at approximately 1:30 in the morning on August 28, 2022, showed Guerrero and Garcia traveling south on Cicero Avenue at speeds of up to 100 mph while veering off the road and exceeding a 30 mph speed limit.

The accident occurred just before 65th Street when Guerrero hit a car that was legally turning and swerved around Garcia’s vehicle, according to officials. While returning to her hotel with a companion, Guerrero’s vehicle collided with a pedestrian, a 41-year-old woman using a crossing. The victim and her companion were also given the all-clear signal.

Garcia was allegedly seen driving slowly past the scene of the accident before driving away in the surveillance footage reviewed by the prosecutors. Guerrero was seen staying put. The results of all drug and alcohol tests were negative, according to his counsel.

When Guerrero’s vehicle reached 65th Street, data from his airbag showed that it was moving at 103 mph. He brought his speed down to 81 mph before accelerating to 87 mph just before the collision.

Both men maintained communication with law enforcement and prosecutors during the months following the collision until the choice to press charges was made, and neither had a history of criminal behavior.

Guerrero, according to the prosecution, has a record of speeding. For speeding, he was supervised in 2014, issued two tickets in 2020, and faced another citation in 2021.

In a plea deal that was announced on Tuesday, Guerrero agreed to 30 months of probation and 300 hours of community service for the charge of reckless murder with a motor vehicle, as reported in court records. This is also the punishment that Garcia received after pleading guilty to aggravated street racing.
