This week, a 30-year-old Kurtistown man who had been detained and charged with four felonies for operating a truck while in possession of a loaded handgun earlier in the month was granted supervised release.

On June 13, 2024, in Hilo, the defendant, Beau De Dier, was allegedly driving a Dodge Ram pickup truck on Kanoelehua Avenue when he was found in possession of a loaded Ruger.357 caliber handgun.
On June 21, the County of Hawaii Office of the Prosecuting Attorney released the following statement:
During a standard traffic check on Stainback Highway, De Dier was approached by South Hilo Patrol officers. Police reports state that after carrying out a search warrant, officers found a large capacity and a loaded Ruger GP100.357 caliber revolver.Glock magazine in 40 caliber.

On Monday afternoon, De Dier appeared in Hilo District Court for the first time. The Hilo District Court judge placed him on supervised release over the protests of the prosecution and mandated that he show up for a preliminary hearing on July 1, 2024.
Place to Keep Pistol or Revolver, Carrying or Possessing a Loaded Firearm on a Public Highway, Ownership or Possession of Firearm Prohibited, and Ownership or Possession of Ammunition Prohibited are the charges against De Dier, according to the complaint.
These are all class B felony offenses, meaning that the maximum punishment is eighteen months in jail or ten years in prison, or four years of probation.
The accused is not guilty until and unless proven so; the charges are only accusations.
