Walgreens expects to execute a wave of closures throughout its estimated 8,600 American locations as part of steps to restructure its faltering operations.

The retail behemoth hasn’t released precise numbers, but on Thursday it announced “significant” scheduled shutdowns for failing stores around the country as part of a continuing optimization process that will take place over a number of years.

CEO Tim Wentworth told the Wall Street Journal that a “meaningful percent” of the roughly one-fourth of less profitable stores are expected to close, implying that the upcoming shop closures carry a lot of weight.

According to Wentworth, the focus during this shake-up will be mostly on unprofitable businesses, those that are too near to one another, or stores that are dealing with persistent theft issues.

Pre-market trading shares fell by almost 9% as a result of Walgreens’ disclosure during the quarterly results report, along with a reduction in the company’s profit outlook for the entire year.

“We continue to face a difficult operating environment, including persistent pressures on the U.S. consumer and the impact of recent marketplace dynamics which have eroded pharmacy margins,” Wentrought said, concluding his discussion of the challenging business conditions. “Our results and outlook reflect these headwinds.”
