The Los Angeles Fire Department reports that early Saturday morning, a woman lost her life in a fire at a townhouse in Panorama City that spread to a nearby residence.
When firefighters arrived at around 3:31 a.m., they found the victim inside a downstairs bedroom of the two-story house in the 9200 block of North Wakefield Avenue, according to LAFD officials. Before firefighters arrived, three other individuals—a 68-year-old guy, a 20-year-old man, and an 83-year-old woman—had fled the fire. They were transported in fair condition to a hospital.
As they entered a unit next door, more than 70 firemen attempted to extinguish the fire while also looking for further victims after learning that there might be more persons trapped inside, according to LAFD. Nobody else was hurt.
According to police, the fire was put out in roughly forty-three minutes.
Both residences have been red-tagged as unsafe for habitation by the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety. According to LAFD, the American Red Cross and the mayor’s Crisis Response Team are offering aid to the displaced citizens.
Although the house that caught fire had smoke alarms, investigators said it’s unclear if they were working at the time. The name of the woman who was killed and the cause of death are being investigated by the LA County Medical Examiner.
