The majority of the choices made during the year were straightforward and simple, but selecting the top new series for 2024 was a difficult task because it was far more subjective than anything that was on the ballot for the general election. The following list, which is presented in random order, crams 18 series into 10 spots that are more or less themed because this has been a quality year. (The list could have easily been greater, as it already does not include fine shows that are still continuing on from previous years.) Great TV continues to happen even though Hollywood has been in a bit of a lull after the epidemic, the strike, or whatever. There are undoubtedly some bad TV shows as well, but there are just too many positives to list.
Is there a clear statement that can be made about these concerts, or is there a cultural movement that can be drawn from them? No. Large-scale historical dramas, cutting-edge comedy, science fiction shows with dual realities, cheeky period romps, true crime, personal narratives in political contexts, and an oddball comedic mystery are all included. And more. They all seem to have been created with obvious dedication by someone with a viewpoint—even a vision—rather than by an algorithm or artificial intelligence. (They refer to it as AI, so you won’t notice the artificial.) They are, for lack of a better term, humanistic. Not to mention that they are all to my liking, thus several of them have already been canceled.
