Stolen U-Haul truck nearly plunged over cliff during pursuit in Monrovia, police say

Authorities claim the high-speed pursuit concluded when the defendant was taken into custody after sliding down a 30-foot hill. This week, the Monrovia Police Department released dash cam footage and other video showing cops pursuing a U-Haul vehicle that was reported stolen.

Officers are seen following the U-Haul truck as he speeds down surface streets and runs stop signs in the footage, which was uploaded to the police department’s Instagram page on Wednesday. As police stated in the post, the driver once collides with a tree on the brink of a cliff, “narrowly avoiding a plunge off a cliff,” before exiting the truck and continuing to run.

“In a dramatic turn of events, the suspect scrambled out of the wreck, tumbling down the hill and onto the street,” the post continues. “He fled from the officers who were pursuing him, making a run for it. The culprit slid down a steep 30-foot hill and jumped over a tiny wall as one officer closed in, avoiding arrest once more.

A group of officers with a K-9 unit are shown on camera finding the guy just outside a house after he has gone over the wall. They arrest him and take him into jail.

Alhambra police had previously been after the same U-Haul, and officers from that department eventually joined the Monrovia police in the chase, according to the police, which took place over the weekend.

Authorities have not disclosed any more information.
