Within 15 minutes, firefighters extinguished a fire that had started on the Redondo Beach Pier shortly after noon on Monday, forcing the pier to temporarily close.
According to the Redondo Beach Fire Department, seven individuals had to be evacuated after the fire began outside the “Mason Riz” building and spread to the inside and roofline.
According to RBFD, the fire was burning in the older, wood-framed section of the pier, prompting a second-alarm fire.
Crews from the nearby departments in Torrance, Manhattan Beach, and El Segundo were called in to help. Redondo Beach Fire also used their fireboat to attack the oceanside fire.
While crews worked to contain the fire, the pier was blocked for around half an hour. The cause of the fire is being investigated by arson investigators.
