The day after Christmas, an officer-involved shooting occurred in South Los Angeles, and Los Angeles police were still investigating the incident.
Officers halted their patrol car to conduct an investigation after observing a man suspect spray painting a wall at approximately 6:40 p.m. last Thursday near the intersection of Hooper Avenue and 92nd Street. Police reported that a second suspect appeared and started shooting right away. Both officers hurried out of their car and fired back.
Other responding officers pursued the accused after they fled in an awaiting vehicle. The driver, identified by police as 20-year-old Kevin Diaz, and two younger suspects were arrested in Compton after the pursuit came to a stop. After receiving medical attention for a gunshot wound, one of the participants was transported to a hospital and placed in critical condition.
Suspected of attempting to kill a police officer, Diaz and the other unharmed suspect were taken into custody and charged. Officers were unharmed.
According to the police, a shotgun shell casing and a loaded.45 caliber handgun without any distinguishable markings were found inside the car.
Investigations into the incident are still ongoing.
