After reviewing a mountain of evidence, including statements from eyewitnesses, phone records, search warrants, and more, the police finally identified Hernandez.

According to Ursitti, when children are involved, homicide investigations become significantly more challenging.

When a child is involved, the emotional toll of the inquiry becomes much heavier, as it does with any investigation involving death. Ursitti reiterated that Mateo and his family were never forgotten.

Shooting happened in the 4400 block of West Marquette Road around 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30, 2022, while the victim, 3-year-old Mateo Zastro, was riding in an SUV with his mom and three brothers.

Authorities say Mateo was hit in the head when a male passenger, Hernandez, drew a gun and opened fire on the red SUV, which is thought to have been a Ford Mustang or Dodge Charger. Everyone involved was able to avoid harm.

At the age of 32, this is Govanni Hernandez, a member of the Chicago Police Department.

Mateo passed away around eight hours after being transferred to Oak Lawn’s Christ Medical Center.

Following a road rage incident on the Southwest Side, a 3-year-old boy tragically lost his life.

A “road-rage incident” between Mateo’s mother and another vehicle started on Cicero Avenue, according to the Sun-Times, and subsequent investigations showed that the shooting was the result of that.

Hernandez is scheduled to have a detention hearing on Friday.
