The Nixon Foundation is asking people to honor President Jimmy Carter by leaving notes in a condolence book at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum starting Monday. The Carter family will receive the book after it is finished.
Given that the late president’s humanitarian efforts during his time as president had a direct impact on the region through his collaboration with Habitat for Humanity, the book offers the Southern California community an opportunity to honor and grieve him.
President Nixon’s daughters, Julie Nixon Eisenhower and Tricia Nixon Cox, posted a statement on X after Carter’s death on December 29.
“His hands-on humanitarian work, which he and Mrs. Carter tirelessly carried out together, helped to provide decent housing, eradicate disease, and improve the lives of millions in communities both at home and abroad.”

The Carter Work Project, which began in 1984 when he and Ms. Carter led a team of Habitat for Humanity volunteers to New York to construct secure and affordable housing, is still held every year.
Two of the yearly home builds took place in Los Angeles: in 1995 in the Watts/Willowbrook neighborhood and again in 2007 in South Los Angeles and San Pedro, where dozens of homes were renovated and 30 new homes were constructed.
Following Carter’s death, Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn, who collaborated with Carter on the San Pedro project, issued a statement.
“Jimmy Carter’s remarkable public service continued after he left office. He has been an advocate of peace and a symbol of kindness and humility for decades,” Hahn added. “Not only locally, but also globally, his legacy will endure for many years to come. I hope he finds peace.
The Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project will take place in Austin, Texas, at Austin Habitat for Humanity.
