Eight charges, including attempted murder and robbery, have been brought against the guy who is suspected of shooting two security guards in downtown Los Angeles.
Nathan Hochman, the district attorney for Los Angeles County, made the accusations against Jabril Andrew Metoyer, 25, public during a press conference on Friday. Robbery, attempted robbery, and attempted murder are among the charges. Special charges against him additionally include personal use of a firearm and personal discharge of a firearm that results in bodily harm.
“This morning, my office filed serious charges against a man accused of attempting to shoplift from a Target store and then escalating his actions to a violent attack that left two security guards injured, one critically, by gunfire,” Hochman stated. “This kind of brazen thievery and violence is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in Los Angeles County.”
Metoyer is being detained on bail of $4 million. Hochman stated that his arraignment is anticipated to take place on Friday.
“With the help of the public, in less than 24 hours after the incident, members of the LAPD Central Division and Metropolitan Division SWAT, were able to apprehend the suspect without incident-quickly removing this dangerous individual from our streets,” stated Jim McDonnell, the LAPD Chief of Police.
Following an hours-long confrontation with SWAT, Metoyer was taken into custody on Tuesday at his apartment complex in the Westlake District. McDonnell said that although no force was utilized, SWAT assisted in his arrest by using a chemical substance.
The incident happened outside the business on Monday just before nine o’clock at night, close to the intersection of Figueroa Street and 7th Street. According to the LAPD, Metoyer was attempting to flee with a luggage filled with stolen goods when the security officers confronted him.
According to police, the individual was seen trying to leave the store via security footage.
“And during that scuffle, the suspect produced a pistol and fired indiscriminately – shooting two people,” LAPD Captain Raul Jovel stated during a press conference on Tuesday. According to him, both people suffered serious injuries; one was discharged from emergency care on Tuesday morning, while the other was kept in critical condition at the hospital.
Police promptly issued pictures of the individual and a description of his physical attributes in an attempt to locate him. The public was cautioned that he was thought to be “armed and dangerous.”
According to Jovel, one of the armed guards returned fire after the man shot at least five rounds.
Jovel later stated that it was thought the man left on foot, despite the LAPD’s claim that he had fled the scene on a bicycle.
According to Hochman, Metoyer also allegedly shot a man who refused to pay him money near 7th and Figueroa streets a few days before to the shooting.
A random double-stabbing occurred at the FIGat7th shopping center in November 2022. A homeless man stabbed a 9-year-old boy and a 25-year-old lady.
According to Jovel, the LAPD is dedicated to ensuring public safety and prosecuting criminals.
