Los Angeles wildfires preempt SAG Awards’ live nominations announcement

Due to terrible wildfires and weather in the Los Angeles area, the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominees have canceled their in-person presentation scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Instead of a live ceremony presented by actors Joey King and Cooper Koch, the nominations for awards honoring the best performances in television and film will be announced via press release.

Two wind-swept fires are destroying homes and buildings in the Altadena district of Pasadena, California, and the Pacific Palisades suburb of Los Angeles.

For the acting and best picture categories, the SAG Awards are a trustworthy Oscar predictor. With their several Golden Globe victories over the weekend, “The Brutalist” and “Emilia Prez” made a name for themselves as strong candidates.

Adrian Brody won best actor for “The Brutalist,” Sebastian Stan won best actor for “A Different Man,” and Demi Moore and Fernanda Torres won best actress for “The Substance” and “I’m Still Here,” respectively. (The Globes divide the acting categories into musical-comedies and dramatic films.) In television, honors were given to Jodie Foster (“True Detective: Night Country”), Colin Ferrel (“The Penguin”), and Jean Smart (“Hacks”).

On February 23 at 8 p.m. Eastern, Kristen Bell will host the 31st annual awards presentation, which will be streamed live on Netflix from the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles. Last year’s ceremony was hosted by Idris Elba.

Several entertainment events have been canceled due to the fires, including the premiere of Jennifer Lopez’s “Unstoppable” movie, the Robbie Williams biographical “Better Man,” and Universal Pictures’ upcoming horror thriller “Wolf Man.”
