For the Marin County man found guilty of killing an Italian police officer, house arrest has been allowed by an Italian court.
Gabriel Natale-Hjorth, 23, has been granted home detention. In July 2019, a police officer in Rome died, and the court reduced his offense to what may be considered negligence. Subsequently, his legal representatives contended that he ought to be permitted to fulfill the remaining 11-year sentence at his grandmother’s residence close to Rome. A judge agreed on Monday.
The events leading up to the July 19, 2019, night when an Italian police officer was killed are revealed by Dan Noyes of ABC7 I-Team. Learn more in the ABC7 Original Series “32 Seconds: A Deadly Night in Rome.”
Natale and his companion, San Francisco resident Finnegan Elder, 24, were on vacation when they were approached by plain-clothes officers following a botched narcotics deal. While one police had Elder pinned on the ground, Natale managed to escape. Elder took out a knife, stabbing the cop repeatedly until he managed to escape.

The Italian courts first handed down life sentences to both of the Bay Area men. Because the Italian officers did not properly identify themselves, Elder’s sentence was lowered earlier this month to 15 years. Elder initially informed the police that he believed the officers were goons with ties to the drug supplier.

“We are so relieved for this chapter for Gabe and his family to be over and a new phase to begin,” stated Elder’s family.
