Following the devastating wildfires that destroyed hundreds of buildings in the Los Angeles region, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued an executive order to expedite the debris collection process.
The executive order will expedite the clearance of debris and the preparedness of the burned areas for possible flooding and mudslides. Future rainstorms could cause disasters throughout the area, as a large portion of the winter season is still to come.
In order to provide Angelenos with the resources they require to rebuild more quickly and effectively, we are working in real-time to assure a prompt and well-organized recovery effort. California has been here before, so we know what it takes to recover from wildfires effectively, and we’re leveraging that knowledge to help individuals affected by these destructive fires more quickly than ever before,” Newsom added.
After touring other areas in Altadena and the Pacific Palisades that were destroyed by the fires, he issued the executive order. More than 10,000 buildings have been destroyed and many more damaged by the fires.
Newsom stated that more firefighters have been stationed throughout Southern California in anticipation of another round of severe fire conditions.
“Prepositioned assets including 60 engines, 8 helicopters, and 13 dozers and water tender trucks have been directed to Los Angeles, Orange, Ventura, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties,” according to the governor’s office.
Newsom obtained a Major Disaster Declaration from President Joe Biden and proclaimed a state of emergency last week.
In order to speed up Los Angeles’ recovery, the governor also signed an executive order. The California Coastal Act and the California Environmental Quality Act’s permitting and review requirements were to be suspended as a result of that order. It will speed up the process of victims rebuilding their homes and businesses.
