Donald Trump is making a comeback to Chicago after the protests in 2016 forced him to leave the rally at the University of Illinois-Chicago campus.

The ex-president, Donald Trump, is scheduled to take part in a panel conversation during the National Association of Black Journalists’ gathering in Chicago.

This will be Trump’s second visit to the city since 2016, when he had to call off a campaign event at the University of Illinois-Chicago due to large protests.

The discussion is set to take place at midday on Wednesday at the Hilton Chicago located on Michigan Avenue.

Trump is set to answer inquiries from three journalists – Rachel Scott from ABC News, Harris Faulkner from Fox News, and Kadia Goba from Semafor – regarding the “urgent matters affecting the Black community.”

Since becoming president, Trump has seldom made trips to Chicago.

As president, he visited the city just once in October 2019 and has not made a comeback since losing the 2020 election to President Joe Biden or starting his campaign for a second term.

The upcoming panel talk marks Trump’s comeback to the city, where he has faced notable demonstrations in the past.

In a statement, NABJ President Ken Lemon expressed that although NABJ does not support political candidates as a journalism group, they appreciate the diligent efforts of their members. Lemon also highlighted the importance of asking challenging questions that will reveal the honest answers that Black Americans desire and require.

At the upcoming Democratic convention in Chicago from August 19th to 22nd, Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to be chosen as the party’s presidential nominee. Harris was also asked to join the convention, and her attendance is still awaiting confirmation, as stated by NABJ leaders.

In a statement, Mayor Brandon Johnson, a fervent advocate of Harris, expressed the city’s readiness to ensure the safety of Trump, who narrowly escaped an assassination plot in Pennsylvania on July 13th.

Johnson stated that while his administration’s principles and actions strongly contrast with those of former President Donald Trump, he assured the residents of Chicago that the city’s departments and agencies are fully equipped to ensure safety during his planned visit.

The Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, along with other organizations, revealed their intention to demonstrate against Trump’s visit. This event is scheduled to occur just before the start of the yearly Lollapalooza music festival in Grant Park, located right across from the hotel, as reported by WTTW.

In the statement where he confirmed his attendance to NABJ, Trump’s campaign highlighted that he had achieved greater advancements for Black Americans than any other recent president by enacting America First strategies in the realms of the economy, immigration, energy, law enforcement, and foreign affairs.

According to a statement from the Trump campaign, African American voters are aware that President Trump is the sole candidate for the presidency who can achieve immediate results, as he has already done so.

This includes groundbreaking achievements such as record low unemployment rates for the Black community, higher median income for Black families, significant and enduring financial support for HBCUs, a thorough bipartisan reform of the criminal justice system, and an allocation of nearly $50 billion to rejuvenate Opportunity Zones.
