The Kansas City Chiefs have been as solid as any NFL club at tight end for the past 10 years because to Travis Kelce, who is widely considered the best of all time.
Even though the 34-year-old Kelce looked powerful as usual in the playoffs last year, he had his worst regular season in a long time. Compared to his previous best of 984 yards in 2015, this was his worst receiving season overall.
His lone touchdown reception in 2023 was the same as his lone touchdown reception in 2019, which was in 2019. He set a new career low with 10.6 yards per reception.
Even if Kelce is still the top tight end in the NFL, his decline was clear, and he was still a dominating presence when it mattered most. Given his age, it is quite probable that he will only show signs of further regression.

This gives the Chiefs a lot to consider regarding the future of their tight end position. With their most recent acquisition, the Chiefs have given the impression that they are planning ahead.
It appears as though the Chiefs are putting possible long-term alternatives to Travis Kelce through their paces.
Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports that following a productive workout, the Chiefs have decided to sign tight end Geor’quarius Spivey, who played for Mississippi State. This is quite surprising given that Spivey had a somewhat underwhelming college career, catching only 28 catches for 298 yards and a single touchdown. Spivey demonstrated sufficient merit to be offered a chance.
In 2024, his chances of seeing playing time are slim. Even while he’s not playing at his usual world-class level, the Chiefs still have Kelce and Irv Smith Jr. locked in as excellent depth. The biggest unknown is whether Spivey will remain with the Chiefs beyond the 2024 season.
Gray and Smith will both be unrestricted free agents at the end of the year, and it is uncertain how much longer Kelce wants to play. Jared Wiley, a tight end that Kansas City selected in the fourth round of the NFL Draft last year, is the only one who has a guaranteed starting position.
Spivey won’t have a huge role to play for the Chiefs in 2024, but he might be an integral cog in the wheel for what’s to come. The Chiefs are showing some forward-thinking by signing Spivey, who isn’t even guaranteed a playing role in 2024.
