The former spouse of deceased Woodland Hills physician Hamid Mirshojae appeared in court for the first time on Tuesday in downtown Los Angeles on charges of murder, with specific accusations of financial gain murder and laying in wait.
District Attorney Nathan Hochman accused 53-year-old Ahang Mirshojae on Monday, stating that “she has been charged with, effectively hiring a hit man,” in connection with the alleged murder of her ex-husband.
The Calabasas woman will remain in jail without bond after her arraignment was rescheduled till January 6.
Ahang Mirshojae and the doctor got divorced in 2010, according to public documents.
A masked man shot and killed Dr. Hamid Mirshojae on the evening of August 23 as he was making his way to his car from his Woodland Hills medical office.
Because surveillance footage showed the suspected shooter waiting in a neighboring parking lot for almost an hour before the 61-year-old doctor left the building, Los Angeles police investigators described the shooting as a targeted attack.
Ahang Mirshojae is one of four individuals indicted by the DA’s office in relation to Dr. Mirshojae’s passing.
The suspected gunman is a 41-year-old man from Texas. Evan Hardman is awaiting extradition to California after being detained in the Houston region last Tuesday.
The complaint alleges that he has a history of robbery convictions in Los Angeles County that date back to 2002, that he personally and intentionally discharged a firearm, and that the murder charge against him includes the special circumstance charges of murder for financial gain and murder by means of lying in wait.
Sarallah Jawed, a 26-year-old Canoga Park resident and co-defendant, was taken into custody on Wednesday. He is charged with murder with the special circumstance of murder for financial gain. He appeared in court on Monday.
The District Attorney’s Office claims that a few days after the murder, Jawed took Hardman out of state.
Ashley Rose Sweeting, 40, of Reseda, was the fourth defendant. She was detained on Tuesday and entered a not guilty plea on Thursday to one count of accessory after the fact and the charge that she had one or more severe or major felony offenses in the past.
Sweeting is still in jail on $1 million bond and is scheduled to return to court on December 24 for a hearing to decide whether there is sufficient evidence against her to allow the matter to go to trial. Sweeting is accused of driving Hardman to and from the shooting scene.
Shawn Randolph, 46, of Valley Village, was another guy arrested in the case last week, but prosecutors decided not to press charges against him right away while police conducted additional investigation.
