Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani and his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, expecting their first child

Shohei Ohtani, a star for the Dodgers, revealed on Saturday that he and his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, are expecting their first child.

Ohtani, who won his first World Series after setting an MLB record this year, announced the news on Instagram with the remark, “Can’t wait for the little rookie to join our family soon!”

He cemented his place in baseball history earlier this year when he became the first player in Major League Baseball to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season. The record-setting ball was sold for $4.4 million. The Fall Classic between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees was just a little more than a month away.

The city’s first Dodgers parade since 1988 was held to commemorate LA’s series victory, which included Freddie Freeman setting records and an incredible comeback in the last game. Ohtani’s first season with the Dodgers, which began with a $700 million contract revealed in December 2023—the most lucrative signing of an MLB player in the league’s history—came to a frenzied conclusion.

In a social media post earlier this year, professional basketball player Tanaka and Ohtani appeared together after the player disclosed a few weeks prior that he is married. He wrote lovingly about his wife at the time, but he did not identify her.

“Not only have I begun a new chapter in my career with the Dodgers but I also have (begun) a new life with someone from my native country of Japan who is very special to me and I wanted everyone to know I am now married,” he wrote on his Instagram account.
