Damaging Santa Ana winds prompt red flag warning for extreme fire conditions

Extreme fire conditions will result from a significant Santa Ana wind event that is moving into Southern California.

Beginning at 10 a.m. on Tuesday and lasting until 6 p.m. on Thursday, the National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for portions of Ventura and Los Angeles counties. North-to-northeast wind gusts of up to 80 mph could be severe and destructive. Authorities warn of power outages and fallen trees. In certain places, isolated gusts in the foothills and mountains might approach 100 mph.

“The 210 corridor from Sylmar to Azusa is likely to see some of the strongest winds,” CBS News Los Angeles Meteorologist Amber Lee stated.

Additionally, from 10 a.m. Tuesday through 6 p.m. Friday, the NWS issued a fire watch for the northern Ventura Mountains and the coastal plain of Ventura County. Additionally, from 6 p.m. on Tuesday until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, the Los Angeles coast, Palos Verdes, and Catalina Island are under fire watch.

According to Lee, the region may experience some of the harshest Santa Ana winds this winter.

The lack of rain in the forecast will result in low humidity, which will make the plants extremely dry.

When handling any possible sources of ignition, weather experts advise people to exercise utmost caution. Wildfires will spread quickly due to the strong winds. Additionally, they caution locals to follow emergency personnel’ orders.

Fire conditions are categorized by the NWS into four levels: minor, moderate, major, and extreme.
