The Ventura County school and University Glen, a nearby residential neighborhood, were evacuated as firefighters attempted to extinguish the roughly 50-acre Laguna Fire at the California State University Channel Islands.
The Ventura County Fire Department reports that the brush fire started close to the campus, along Laguna Road and Hueneme Road. As ground troops and water-dropping planes battled the wind-driven fire, it pushed its way up a slope.
About three hours after it started, firefighters were able to contain the fire.Around noon, the institution and the surrounding residential area were exempted from the evacuation orders. Classes were canceled for the remainder of the day, according to university officials, but they would resume on Friday.
While firefighters stay on the scene, Potrero Road and Lewis Road are closed.
The Camarillo Community Center, located at 1605 E. Burnley Street, Camarillo, was designated as a temporary evacuation destination.
