The Chargers’ running defense was put to the test by the Baltimore Ravens. The passing defense may come under attack this week.
The Chargers will take on the fifth-ranked passing offense of the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium after allowing the Ravens to rush for a season-high 212 yards last week.
Running back Bijan Robinson and receiver Drake London are two of Atlanta quarterback Kirk Cousins’ varied weapons. London, a standout player at USC, is on track to become the first player in Falcons history to have at least 65 receptions in each of his first three seasons. He is just four catches away from doing so. Robinson is the only running back in his position to rank in the top 10 in both rushing and receiving with 783 yards rushing and 359 yards receiving.
The Chargers defense may be without at least three starters due to injuries. Cornerback Cam Hart (ankle), safety Alohi Gilman, and linebacker Denzel Perryman (groin) are all sidelined, and linebacker Daiyan Henley (calf) is doubtful. Henley is likely to play even though he leads the club with 99 tackles this season and has double-digit stops in five straight games.
The Chargers will turn to Troy Dye or Nick Niemann, who split reps against the Ravens and finished with three and eight tackles, respectively, while Perryman is sidelined for the second straight game. Due to an ankle issue, rookie linebacker Junior Colson, who finished third in the inside linebacker rotation, is currently listed as injured.
The Falcons (6-5) are rated 16th in scoring after two straight defeats, but ranking sixth in overall offense. They average 22.2 points per game. In their most recent game against the Denver Broncos, they only managed to score six points.
