Workers in York County made the shocking discovery of human remains earlier today, which prompted the York County Sheriff’s Office to launch a comprehensive investigation. Excavation is now underway in the region surrounding the 4000 block of South Carolina Highway 161, where the bones were discovered.
When employees reported discovering what seemed like skeleton bones buried in the dirt at about 9:00 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office was notified. Swift action was taken by the authorities who secured the location and began an extensive investigation to identify the dead and their circumstances.
South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) forensic specialists and sheriff’s officers are coordinating their efforts to determine what happened. We are now committed to doing an investigation that is both comprehensive and courteous, as stated by Deputy Sarah Miller, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office. We’re using forensic investigation to authenticate the identity of the remains and find out how long they’ve been here.
The cause of death is still unknown at this time. The Sheriff’s Office has been tight-lipped about the remains’ condition and any new information that could help solve the case.
