An Essential Retailer Pulls Out of Michigan: Significant Store Closures Confirmed

A huge retailer that is crucial for many people is shutting down its stores in Michigan following its bankruptcy filing under Chapter 11 in October of the previous year.

Rite Aid has revealed its plans to shut down a combined 50 stores in Ohio and Michigan, as detailed in recent documents filed during the company’s bankruptcy proceedings.

Last October, the company sought protection under Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New Jersey. In the past week, they submitted three legal papers listing a total of 50 locations that are set to shut down.

In Michigan, there will be a grand total of 33 stores shutting down, while in Ohio, a total of 17 stores will be closing their doors.

At the beginning of this month, the store submitted paperwork detailing over 60 additional locations set to be shut down in those two states, according to Super Market News.

During the month of June, Rite Aid submitted paperwork detailing the shutdown of 12 stores in Michigan and 15 in Ohio.

Soon after being listed, the Detroit Free Press revealed that Rite Aid workers were informed of the company’s intention to shut down all its stores in Michigan and the majority of its stores in Ohio.

Last month, Rite Aid submitted a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management, and Budget, announcing its intention to shut down its Waterford distribution center in the state. This decision will unfortunately lead to the dismissal of 191 employees.

When the retailer declared bankruptcy last year, it announced the closure of 154 stores as a first step.

Nevertheless, the company has expanded the list by incorporating hundreds of new locations throughout the nation.

The retailer from Philadelphia filed for bankruptcy with a total of 2,111 stores.

As per the information on its website, Rite Aid is currently running 1,591 stores.
