Alert! New Arizona Law Targets Decrease in Children Aging Out of Foster Care Nationwide

Phoenix, Arizona —

The Center for the Rights of Abused Children introduced a bill that the Arizona legislature enacted yesterday with the goal of assisting abused children who are most likely to age out of the foster care system in finding loving, safe homes. It is expected that Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs would sign the legislation.

Representative Matt Gress is the sponsor of House Bill 2704, which creates the Foster Youth Permanency Project Team within the Department of Child Safety. The Project is based on a successful reform in Georgia that placed homeless adolescents in permanent homes.

Georgia was able to lower the percentage of teenagers leaving the program by 34% of the youngsters under review over a ten-year period. Arizonan projections indicate that if the initiative is implemented well, hundreds more teenagers may be assisted annually in finding families as opposed to aging out of the system.

DCS must identify children who are at risk of aging out and intensify efforts to locate them a permanent home under the new law. In order to guarantee that every effort is made to locate a secure adoptive home for the child, the department will bring together advocates, guardians, and lawyers and collaborate to identify and eliminate obstacles to permanent permanence.

The CEO of the Center, Darcy Olsen, stated, “We believe there is a family for every child in need.” “This reform will create a link between adoptive families, loving relatives, and children in need of homes and those who are prepared and eager to bring them home.”
