After nearly $40k worth of toys stolen in South LA, community comes together to save Christmas

It looked as though a late-saturday giveaway would not go place after a U-Haul carrying toys valued at around forty thousand dollars was stolen from outside a house in South Los Angeles. A Chargers linebacker and his community had another opinion about it, and they delivered hundreds of toys right on schedule.

The moments the truck was stolen from outside Eugene Henley’s Windsor Park residence early on Saturday morning are captured on surveillance tape. They claim that the Chargers, the Henley family, or other private parties provided or bought every gift that was initially aboard the truck.

Henley, who assists in managing his family’s nonprofit business, Developing Options, said, “It’s kind of crazy to think that somebody was stealing a bunch of toys, stealing Christmas.”

At that time, they believed that the 20-year custom of giving the toys to Crenshaw kids would have to end in disappointment.

On Saturday night, Henley was talking to KCAL News when truckload after truckload of brand-new toys appeared outside their house.

“Damn near Christmas miracle, you know what I’m saying, here in South Central!” exclaimed a man.

Thanks in large part to city officials and the Los Angeles Fire Department, which organizes its own toy drive, the community came together to make a fresh round of donations to keep the holiday spirit alive after learning about the tragedy.

Henley remarked, “This is a great save,” We didn’t have any toys, so this is a nice communal save. And I am ecstatic.”

“At one point there was a lack of hope,” Crenshaw native Daiyan Henley, who is now having a breakthrough season with the Bolts, said. However, there are other people in this group who refuse to go for it, and I believe it just demonstrates the inner strength. And you currently have a community that came together and made it happen.

They are optimistic that whomever stole the truck will come forward and give back the stolen presents.
