Even though the Rose Parade is gone, you can still get a close-up look and sniff at the floats through Friday.
After the Jan. 1 ceremony, organizers display the elaborate, handcrafted creations for everyone to see as part of the parade tradition. Additionally, Floatfest, which features 39 floats on exhibit along two miles of Sierra Madre and Washington Boulevards, has been extended by one day this year.
The whole surface of the float must be covered with natural materials, such as flowers, bark, leaves, seeds, and fruits, in order to be eligible for admission.
Candy Carlson of the Tournament of Roses Parade described the challenge and creativity of working with natural materials. “They look fantastic on TV, then all of the sudden you’re like ‘Is that an onion that was used?'”
The floats are generally maintained throughout the year. Although the prices vary, they start at about $275,000.
In addition to enjoying the vistas, Carlson adds the event is family-friendly and offers a ton of entertainment, including food trucks, a kid’s scavenger hunt, and the Rose Petal bar for adults.
Floatfest is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and until 5 p.m. on Thursday. Tickets may only be purchased online and cost $25. Youngsters under five enter free of charge.
