Suspect faces 5 attempted murder charges after shooting near MacArthur Park

A 27-year-old man was accused by Los Angeles County prosecutors for allegedly shooting five individuals last week close to MacArthur Park.

In the Westlake District, the incident occurred last Wednesday at approximately 12:40 a.m. close to the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and S. Alvarado Street. According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, officers believe the suspect shot four men and one lady in a group of individuals.

According to the police, several victims had serious injuries.

Later that day, Jose Daniel Amaya, 27, was taken into custody by the Los Angeles Police Department for the shooting. Amaya was accused with five counts of attempted murder, including five enhancements for gun punishment, authorities said on January 27. He faces several life terms if found guilty as alleged.

“Gun violence continues to be a devastating scourge in Los Angeles, and today my office has taken decisive action by filing five gun sentencing enhancements, one for each victim,” Nathan Hochman, the district attorney, stated. “These enhancements carry an additional penalty of 25 years to life in prison.”

On Monday, Amaya was set to be arraigned at the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center. Hochman’s legal team suggested a $8 million bail amount.

“This is a clear and unequivocal message: gun violence will not be tolerated in Los Angeles County,” he stated.
