Ocean water quality rain advisory issued in LA County after mudslides carry debris from burn scar areas

Following weekend rainfall that resulted in mudslides and debris flows in burn scar areas, a rain alert for ocean water quality was issued for all beaches in Los Angeles County.

The public is advised to stay away from any water contact at beaches by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

According to officials, there may be greater bacterial concentrations in storm drains, creeks, and rivers.

Debris, trash, and other harmful waste flowed into the burn scar areas from the Palisades and Eaton fires due to the recent rainstorms. Authorities caution that anybody who enter the water may get sick.

The warning will be in force until Thursday at 8 a.m. Rain advisories often last for 72 hours following the cessation of precipitation. If the rain persists, it can be prolonged.

“Once the rain advisory is lifted, the ocean water advisory for Surfrider Beach to Dockweiler State Beach at World Way will remain due to fire debris runoff, which may contain substances including arsenic, other metals, and asbestos, which can be harmful to health,” health authorities stated.
