Bald eagles Jackie and Shadow lay first egg of season in Big Bear nest

Jackie deposited her first egg of the season on Wednesday night, which is good news from Big Bear’s most-watched eagle’s nest.

The Friends of Big Bear Valley live cam, which shows everyone Jackie and Shadow’s nest life, captured the victory.

Jackie and the egg are both doing well. She deserves congratulations for a delivery that went well and efficiently. Big Bear Valley friends wrote.

It is believed to be the first active bald eagle nest in the Big Bear Valley and was found in the San Bernardino National Forest.

In 2013, Friends of Big Bear Valley provided funding and installation for the authorized nest camera. A new pair of bald eagles moved in after the original residents that the camera had been tracking left.

Jackie and Shadow, current residents, successfully reared chicks in 2019 and 2022. In 2018, Jackie raised a chick in the nest with another partner.

Last January, Jackie deposited three eggs, but none of them hatched, making it a terrible season. Eggs typically take 35 days to hatch.

While Jackie took a break Thursday morning, friends of Big Bear Valley shared that Shadow had seen the egg for the first time. According to the group, Jackie would probably spend the night on the egg while Shadow roosts in a neighboring tree.

Friends of Big Bear Valley said on Facebook, “He stared at it a bit, like he couldn’t really believe that it was here already.”

“After a much-needed rest, Jackie came back, and Shadow gave her a delicious piece of breakfast fish, which she loved! This morning, Shadow took care of the egg and did some housework. Even after the egg or eggs are hatched, they will keep performing these switcheroo shifts.

According to the organization, until the clutch’s last egg is laid, the pair will not incubate the first egg or eggs full-time.

“If there is another egg coming, it will probably arrive on January 25, three days following the first. However, everything is conceivable. We appreciate your patience while we watch this incredible process.
