Los Angeles sports teams donate $8 million to fire victims

An $8 million pledge from Los Angeles sports clubs is being used to support firefighters and victims fighting the wildfires in Southern California.

Twelve professional sports organizations in all, along with the foundations of the teams themselves, are giving back to the communities that have helped them.

As of right now, the Los Angeles team includes the Angels, Chargers, Clippers, Dodgers, Ducks, Galaxy, Kings, LAFC, Lakers, Rams, and Sparks.

According to LA Galaxy VP of communications Jamie Alvarez, “the community came through for us during our playoff run.” “Over the last few years, they have supported us as we have expanded…The fact that we are able to donate this $1 million to aid in the recovery of all of Los Angeles makes me really proud. The $1 million commitment was made in collaboration with the LA Galaxy, LA Kings, and ownership company AEG.

The American Red Cross, the Los Angeles Fire Department Foundation, the California Fire Foundation, the Eaton Canyon Fire Relief and Recovery Fund, World Central Kitchen, the California Community Foundation Wildfire Recovery Fund, Team Rubicon, and several local animal rescue organizations are among the recipients of the teams’ donations.

Additionally, Fanatics has teamed up with the 12 contributing clubs to provide $3 million worth of items to those who have had to leave their homes. In addition, teams are donating school supplies and hygiene kits, which will be made available to fire victims.

The Dignity Health Sports Park at Legends Plaza is hosting a LA Galaxy donation drive in Carson until 4 p.m., and it will return on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cobi Jones, a former LA Galaxy player, said he is in awe of the fan love. “I know what the Galaxy and Galaxy fans have to offer and this has been a tough situation for Los Angeles and the surrounding areas,” Jones stated. “This gives the Galaxy fans and anyone the opportunity to try to find a way to give back.”

Water, hygiene products, blankets, gloves, baby necessities, children’s gear, and masks are among the items being gathered at the LA Galaxy donation drive.

Donation drives will be held during the Lakers’ upcoming home games on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Bins for collection will be located outside the Crypto.com Arena.

Items such as deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, lotion, waterless shampoo, phone chargers, mittens, socks, beanies, blankets, and hand warmers will all be accepted. Nut butters and peanut butter, protein-based snacks like bars and protein cookies, crackers, trail mix, fruit snacks, energy bars, pop-top chicken and tuna, 100% juice boxes, cereal boxes, ultra-high-temperature processed milk, 16- to 20-ounce water bottles, and non-carbonated drinks are among the foods.

The distribution events will take place at Dodger Stadium, SoFi Stadium, and BMO Stadium on January 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for those who were evacuated from the fires. It will be necessary to provide proof of residency in the evacuated zip codes. Residents at evacuation shelters will have access to bus service.
