Pacific Palisades brush fire burns 20 acres amid “extreme” red flag warning

Authorities warned of “extreme” chances of rapidly spreading wildfires due to weather conditions, as a brush fire in the Pacific Palisades burnt over 20 acres on Tuesday.

A “Particularly Dangerous Situation” red flag warning, which the National Weather Service issues in more severe circumstances of critical fire weather, is currently in effect for a large portion of Ventura and Los Angeles counties, including the coastal area where the fire was recorded. Just before the Mountain Fire burned across about 20,000 acres in the latter part of last year, the similar warning was sent out.

The Los Angeles Fire Department issued an alarm at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, stating that the fire was located close to 1190 North Piedra Morada Dr.

Given the meteorological conditions in Southern California this week, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection has been preparing more resources to deal with the potential for wildfires to ignite readily and spread swiftly. Strong Santa Ana winds will blow across much of the region, with gusts as high as 60 to 70 mph in many places and as high as 100 mph in others.

According to the National Weather Service, “this will likely be a life-threatening, destructive, and widespread windstorm.” The “Particularly Dangerous Situation” warning will be in force for locations surrounding Malibu from noon on Tuesday until 4 p.m.

More than two dozen buildings, including several residences, were destroyed by the more than 4,000-acre Franklin Fire that struck the seaside village in December.

Stay tuned for more developments on this evolving story.
