Anaheim police fatally shoot man while responding to possible robbery call

Authorities said on Saturday that Anaheim police fatally shot a man while responding to a report of a potential robbery in a neighborhood where they later found a replica pistol.

According to the Anaheim Police Department, four officers were engaged in the shooting in the 1200 block of East South Street. They arrived on the scene at approximately 8 p.m. on Friday and started firing when they came into contact with the suspect. The agency did not disclose the circumstances surrounding the incident or whether the suspect pointed the phony pistol at cops or refused to comply.

According to a news statement from the department, paramedics were dispatched to the scene and officers provided first aid. After being transported to a hospital, the man—who police said was around 30 years old—was declared dead not long after his arrival.

According to authorities, none of the four officers who were shot were hurt.

The phony gun discovered at the scene was described by Anaheim police in a press release as a “realistic-looking replica firearm.” The statement adds that the shooting is currently being investigated by the California Attorney General “due to the type of weapon recovered.”

All officer-involved shootings that result in the death of an unarmed person are investigated by the Attorney General under AB 1506, a state law that went into effect in 2021. Prior to the bill’s signing into law in September 2020, all such shootings were traditionally looked into by local law enforcement and prosecutors. This was in addition to other criminal justice reform initiatives that California introduced in the wake of George Floyd’s death and the widespread protests that followed across the country.
