On Wednesday night, USC defeated the Matadors 90-69, pulling away from Cal State Northridge in the second half thanks to 23 points from Chibuzo Agbo and 21 points from Desmond Claude.
The Trojans (8-4) have won three straight after a three-game losing streak, led by 16 points from Saint Thomas and 12 from Josh Cohen.
Keonte Jones and PJ Fuller II each scored 17 points for the Matadors (7-4).
After Claude made a three-point play and Thomas made two 3-pointers in a minute, USC increased their advantage from 54-49 to 14 points, and the Trojans continued to lead by double digits for the remainder of the game.
With 13:54 remaining before halftime, USC went on a 13-2 run in less than two minutes, converting a 9–8 lead into a 22–10 lead. However, CSUN steadily started to make progress, playing quickly to generate offensive space. In the first half, the Matadors scored 20–12 points more than USC.
A nearly ten-minute CSUN scoring spree ended with Jones’ layup, giving the Matadors a 36-35 edge. As the half came to a close, the Trojans led 40-39 thanks to a deep, step-back 3-pointer from reserve Kevin Patton as time ran out.
After USC opened the second with an 8-0 run, CSUN rallied on a 6-2 run to close the gap to 50-44.
On Saturday, the Matadors will host Chicago State. On Sunday, Southern University will visit USC.
