Innocent driver killed as pursuit ends with violent crash in Orange County

On Wednesday afternoon, a high-speed pursuit in La Palma ended violently, killing an innocent driver.

According to the Fullerton Police Department, the pursuit started just before 12:40 p.m. in the city of Fullerton when a detective spotted a man who was suspected of stealing from an Albertsons shop close to N. Gilbert Street and W. Malvern Avenue.

Before he left the scene, the detective seen the man get into a white Nissan Rogue. Officers pursued the suspect after he ran away when they tried to stop the automobile over.

The suspect struck a vehicle while escaping close to Brookhurst Road and Orangethorpe Avenue, but he kept driving, according to the police. He eventually entered the 91 Freeway’s lanes, briefly heading west, and then turned off at Knott Avenue. Fullerton police claim to have lost sight of the car there.

Officers from the La Palma Police Department were able to track down the driver around La Palma Avenue and Walker Street, where they resumed their chase after Buena Park police, who were also pursuing the suspect, lost sight of him at one point.

“The suspect vehicle crashed into an uninvolved blue BMW in the area of La Palma Ave. and Moody St., disabling the suspect vehicle and ending the pursuit,” according to police.

The innocent BMW driver, a 60-year-old woman, was fatally injured in the collision. Her identity is unknown.

Anthony Hanzal, a 43-year-old male from Anaheim, was transferred to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for injuries he sustained in the collision after the officer detained him. According to authorities, he will be charged with a long list of offenses. These consist of hit-and-run, petty theft, and felony evasion.

Investigators from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department are also investigating the case, which may lead to further charges, according to the police.
