Winter has arrived. The weather is frigid, and the leaves have fallen. At least you won’t look too ridiculous in a sweater if the weather forecast isn’t accurate in Los Angeles.
However, I sense traces of life everywhere I look in the 2024 film landscape. The supermajority of seven films on my top ten list were made by first- and second-time directors, which bodes well for 2025 and beyond. There is talent, and it is being recognized.
The burden of portraying the year’s best movies as well as the year itself falls on a top-10 list. These are the tales that are relevant now, the inventions that seem novel, and the test balloons for the future of the art form. Theaters have had a rough few years, but even though Atrip to Oz wasn’t on my list, I think we’re headed in a great direction. We’re going to witness some wizardry, so get on board.
