California Woman Fatally Injured in Deer Collision on Local Highway

The South Dakota Highway Patrol reported on August 1 that a woman from California passed away from injuries she suffered in a car accident with a deer in July.

At around 9:13 a.m. on July 18, a deadly crash occurred on Interstate 90, about five miles west of Piedmont. As the 2006 Toyota Highlander careened eastward, a deer darted out of the median and into the middle of the road.

After the deer and windshield crashed, the driver lost control of the vehicle. After veering off the road, the car eventually stopped in a ditch close by.

A 38-year-old female driver from California was killed in the crash. A 40-year-old man and two children, ages three and five, were among the three occupants in the car who suffered from minor injuries.

All passengers were safely fastened into their seatbelts when the accident occurred, according to reports.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol’s investigation, driving too fast for conditions or being under the influence of alcohol were not factors in the collision.

The identity of the individuals involved will not be released until their next of kin have been notified.

The collision’s causes are still under investigation by the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
