WFCN –
Buying school supplies is an inevitable part of getting ready for the upcoming school year. However, a sales tax holiday is soon approaching, so parents may relax.
Texas residents can enjoy a sales tax holiday for school supplies from August 9-11. During this time, they can avoid paying as much as 8.25% in sales tax on select purchases. The start of the school year is Aug. 13 for Fort Worth ISD and many other districts.
Everything from clothing and backpacks to stationery and notepads is exempt from sales tax. Important information:
Customers can purchase tax-free items in-store, over the phone, or online.
During the exemption time, customers can place online purchases and pay for the item, but they can still receive it after the fact.
From August 9th at 12:01 a.m. until August 11th at midnight, there will be no sales tax. For assistance with refunds or any other matters, the Texas Comptroller suggests dialing 800-252-5555.

There is no exception for these items:
- Things went for more than $100.

- Service for renting, altering, and cleaning clothing and footwear.
- Tools and materials utilized in garment repair include thread, buttons, hooks, yarn, fabric, and zippers.
- Accessories, jewelry, satchels, briefcases, and travel bags.

- There is no sales tax because the seller includes all transportation, shipping, handling, and delivery costs in the goods price.
Texans should consider the product’s total sales price to see if it qualifies for exemption, since products must be less than $100 to qualify.
For instance, a pair of pants would not qualify as tax-free if the price was $95 plus a $10 delivery charge, for a total of $105 in the end.
