In mid-July, the authorities in Miami-Dade County detained the individual believed to be accountable for the death of an 18-year-old cyclist in a collision and escaping from the accident site.

Authorities reported that Yoandrys Alfredo Garcia, a 40-year-old resident of west Miami-Dade, was driving a Jeep Wrangler around 1:15 a.m. on July 15 when he collided with Kevin Chaparro, who was cycling in the 3200 block of Southwest 127th Avenue in the unincorporated Tamiami region.

Chaparro recently relocated from Colombia to South Florida in order to pursue his studies at Millennia Atlantic University with a soccer scholarship.

Authorities stated that an inquiry led to the discovery of Garcia’s identity, as he reached out to a detective from the Miami-Dade Police Department via his legal representative.

Garcia was taken into custody by law enforcement for the alleged crimes of fleeing the scene of a fatal accident and trying to manipulate evidence.

By Thursday, the Cuban citizen was detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center.

He informed the judge that he has resided in this nation for the last seven years.

Garcia is confronted with a complete bond amount of $20,000 and, if he is released on bond, he will have to abide by a curfew at night and is prohibited from driving.

The family of Chaparro is currently raising funds to journey from Colombia to South Florida in order to retrieve his remains.
