Closure Alert: Iconic Grocery Chain in Mass. Closes Multiple Locations

WFCN –

Shoppers in Massachusetts are in grief as a favorite grocery chain painfully closes eight outlets. According to shoppers, there won’t be many places to shop after Stop & Shop closes. By year’s end, eight Stop & Shop locations in Massachusetts will have shut down.

These are among the 32 establishments in the Northeast that have been compelled to close their doors.

Stores that were not functioning well were told in May that they will be shuttered by November 2.

“Everyone’s at Aldi,” remarked one Facebook participant.

Residents have long relied on the stores in Worcester, Massachusetts, which is less than an hour’s drive from Boston.

Many are concerned about how the community’s citizens will be affected by these proposed closures.

“People are worried,” stated Jennifer Pacillo, a councilwoman for the district.

Even though she did mention that locals have an Aldi to choose from, she was quick to point out that “it is not a full-service grocery store…” We should all be able to afford nutritious meals.

“Like many others, I was caught off guard by the news that Stop & Shop would be closing its doors for good,” commented Alex Corrales, executive director of Worcester’s Housing Authority.

Local officials and citizens are holding out hope that Stop & Shop’s shop closures are just temporary.

Another Worcester District City Councilor, Candy Mero-Carlson, stated, “I certainly do understand that we can’t control sometimes what these corporations do, but I do think it’s worth talking to Stop & Shop.”

People in the city have said that the grocery store is an employer.

The international grocery store conglomerate Ahold Delhaize runs the Stop & Shop brand.

Stop & Shop is making “difficult decisions to close underperforming stores to create a healthy story base for the long term,” according to the group’s CEO, JJ Fleeman. The chain “is not where we want to be or need to be,” he said.

According to The Sun, despite the supermarket shop’s efforts to rebuild nearly half of its nearly 400 stores since 2018, this has not been sufficient to avert store closures.

The following states will not be immune to Stop & Shop closures this year: Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York.
